Secret Hideout | In Hubei, the unknown lives and deaths 02/25/2020

Today there was a video that looked very sad.

Near Wuhan Union Hospital, a group of homeless people were fighting over the relief food that was being given to them.

These people who were hungry and had no way out have been in this undignified situation for over a month.

They live outdoors in the square:

They drink water brought from the hospital:

They eat:

They eat leftover food from garbage cans.

Looking at their clothes, they are not really "homeless" in the true sense. Most of them are migrant workers who came to Wuhan for work, but they became homeless because they couldn't leave Wuhan.

It is hard to imagine how many strangers have been forgotten in this accident. After the city was locked down on the 22nd, they have no idea how they have been surviving, especially since there are many top-tier hospitals and makeshift hospitals nearby. It is actually dangerous to dig through garbage cans.

Perhaps the reason they live here is because everywhere else is closed, and only near the hospital can they find hot water.

I wonder how lonely they were on New Year's Eve, abandoned in Wuhan. And during the days when it snowed in Wuhan and the temperature dropped below zero, how did they survive?

During the Lunar New Year when they should have been reunited with their families, they ate leftover food from garbage cans and made it through this month. At this moment, I understand Du Fu's words, "All the poor rejoice when the world is in chaos."

Some people posted rescue hotlines and websites, but many of them have been outside for many days. Perhaps their phones have run out of battery, or maybe they don't use the internet much and are cut off from the outside world.

Also yesterday afternoon, when the staff of Zhuyi Community in Huayu Street, Shiyan City, Hubei Province knocked on the door of Unit 502 in Building 10 of Block 36 to check body temperature, they found a grandfather and grandson at home. The little boy was 4 or 5 years old, and the grandfather was 71 years old. However, the little boy's grandfather had already passed away for several days.

The staff found the grandfather's body in the bathroom, with blood oozing from the corners of his mouth. It was determined to be sudden cardiac death.

Volunteers asked the boy why he didn't go out, and the boy replied, "Grandpa said there is a virus outside, and we can't go out." At this point, the little boy had been eating biscuits at home for several days. And the 4 or 5-year-old boy and his 70-year-old grandfather were locked inside and couldn't see the outside world.

In addition to "homeless" and "grandfather and grandson," today I also saw an elderly person who had been eating pumpkin for half a month:

The elderly people don't know how to order food online with their phones, and they don't know who to ask for help. Maybe they are old, hard of hearing, and slow in their movements. But does anyone know that they also want to eat some meat?

This society needs not only talents but also more ordinary people. Most of the people in Wuhan are still staying at home enduring the virus, perhaps being criticized by people from other provinces. Some of them may be the builders of Wuhan, but they have been "abandoned" in this unexpected situation.

But they still wear masks properly, and when they hear that they can't get food, they just leave without causing trouble for the city. They stay with their deceased grandfathers and don't dare to ask for help even after eating biscuits for four or five days. When volunteers come to help them, they don't have any other requests, just "give us some food."

They are all ordinary people who work hard for a living. They have also tidied their collars and ironed their clothes before going out. They are also treasures in the hands of their parents and elders. Who would have thought that they would end up in such a miserable state in the midst of natural and man-made disasters?

Not to mention the warmth of a cozy bed, hot food, and the company of family, at this moment, even their dignity and decency have become luxuries.

In this era where even a celebrity divorce can become a hot topic, there are people who have become homeless in a big city and can do nothing about it. There are elderly people who can't fulfill their desire to eat something different, and there are elderly people lying quietly in their own bathrooms for four or five days without anyone caring.

In this winter in Hubei, how many lives have been abandoned and lost without anyone knowing?
